The Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe follows the crisis of those fleeing to Europe, and demands humanitarian support for them

The Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe is closely following the tragedy of thousands of individuals fleeing desperate circumstances, and seeking safe haven in Europe, at great risk to their lives in travelling by sea, and the complex human suffering arising from that.

The Federation follows the extreme conditions in which asylum seekers find themselves in some European countries, and points to reports that indicate a lack of the most basic of services, which requires urgent intervention on the part of relevant official bodies and human rights organisations to address any shortcomings.

The Federation urges Europe’s Muslims and their organisations to act quickly in providing material assistance and moral support to the newcomers in their grave difficulty, by launching urgent campaigns and initiatives for this purpose, while coordinating efforts with the relevant local authorities and humanitarian bodies in this regard.

The Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe calls attention to the fact that this new wave of asylum seekers travelling across the sea and European borders, with the associated diverse risks and grave tragedies suffered by hundreds of persons daily, among them entire families, seems intimately linked to the behaviour of dictatorial regimes, and the efforts to overthrow democracy in the Arab context, resulting in political, social, and economic crises.

The huge rise in the number of asylum seekers in this manner is a grave indicator of the paths of aspiration blocked in the face of peoples, following the widespread optimism regarding democratic transformation coming with the Arab Spring. This emphasises that the necessary European treatment of the crisis must not ignore the demands of supporting democracy, combating military coups, and supporting comprehensive development, as the key priority in European foreign policy.
